Boy's basketball of to a fast start

The boy’s basketball team is headed into the holiday break with a perfect 3-0 record. They won their first game over the Fredrick Douglas Hurricanes 47-32. The next week the boys defeated Fisher Middle School 44-23, wow.

Their last game was December 11th against A.L. Holmes, the Hurricanes used full-court pressure to take a 34-11 lead into halftime. The Hurricanes finished the game winning 51-19.

The boy’s games are at King High School on Saturdays, all students and staff are encouraged to come out and cheer on the team!

On September 16th the Marcus Garvey girls basketball team started their journey, into the 2010 season. At least 19 potential players came out for the team; after tryouts only 12 remained.

I can remember the first game, butterflies running through our stomachs. The audience cheering only added to the jitters, but then the horn rang and the game began. The team started the season with a surprising loss!

Despite the slow start, the Lady Hurricanes finished their season with a 6-2 record and came in second place. The girls received medals and trophies and also took a team picture at King High, where the games were played. The girls all agreed, it was an enjoyable season.

Detroit Compact Scholarship Program

Historical Background:

In late 1987, New Detroit Incorporated, the Governor of the Michigan, and Detroit Strategic Planning Project recommended the creation of the Detroit Compact. The compact was designed to enhance the quality of public education by providing a certainty of opportunity for students to attain specific standards. Tangible rewards and incentives are provided to help motivate to achieve academic excellence.

Ms. Holsey has worked for the Compact Program for 20 years, and at Marcus Garvey for two. Since her time here, nearly 200 hundred middle school students have signed up for the program.

Mission Statement:

The Detroit Compact is an education, community, parent, student, government, labor, and business partner, designed to increase the number of Detroit Public School students who are job and college ready.

Kwanzaa

As we celebrate Kwanzaa at Marcus Garvey we will be having the Karamu (the feast). The Karamu is a time for reflecting, rejoicing, and recommitting (setting our goals for life). The Karamu will be Tuesday, December 14, 2010. We would be pleased if each child that comes brings a dish.

Previous Karamus have turned out to be great experiences, I really recommend that you come. There are times that we laugh and I promise that you will have a great time, especially the home cooked meals.

Principal’s Corner with Mr. Hearn: First Semester Recap

“Its been years since we merged schools. This semester has been a step in the greater success of the up-and-coming of Marcus Garvey, in my perspective. Being a high performing school hasn’t just now become an accomplishment, it is a record at Marcus Garvey Academy. We have been recognized by Skillman for academic achievement, definitely an accomplishment, but I would say its to be expected. Through DPS grants we have been allowed to move forward with eight million dollars in renovations and upgrades, we have new windows, a heating system, swimming pool, computers, etc.”

On the transition:

“It’s been a challenging but rewarding experience. Including not only being placed in a different, but larger building; but also getting every student on board with the Garvey way. Overall its been a wonderful experience.”

When asked how he felt about giving a student interview, Mr. Hearn said, “I couldn’t think of a better person.” Having said that, coming from Mr. Hearn as well as your fellow reporter, have a great Kwanzaa and Holiday season!
